Denso Announces 8,000 gallons (30,280 liters) of Rigspray protects new sheet piles in New York City

Denso Announces 8,000 gallons (30,280 liters) of Rigspray protects new sheet piles in New York City

Two-part high solids reinforced glass flake coating with outstanding resistance to corrosion and abrasion.

February, 2013

Like many existing timber structures in New York and New Jersey, a deteriorating timber pile bulkhead (located in New York City’s Upper East Side) needed to be replaced. The New York City Department of Transportation selected the largest and most expensive steel sheet piles as the replacement. In addition, Denso Rigspray was specified as the coating of choice to protect these new sheet piles. Rigspray is designed specifically for the long-term protection of steel structures exposed to corrosive marine environments. A dual layer coating (30 mils black and 30 mils gray) was specified to achieve 60 mils of coating protection.

A total of 212 sheet piles, that measured 6 ft. x 75 ft. (1.83 m x 23 m) were coated with Rigspray in a steel plant in Pennsylvania. Over 8,000 gallons (30,280 liters) was used to coat the 300,000 sq. ft. (27,870 sq. meters). Once completed, the coated steel sheets were transported to the Manhattan jobsite where they were prepped for installation. Due to the sheer size and weight, 15,000 lbs. (6,804 kgs.) per sheet pile, a crane was first used to position the sheet piles in place before they were driven into the mud line.

In recent years, more engineering companies have been specifying Rigspray as the coating of choice, to protect steel structures in corrosive marine environments.

Denso Announces Tank Base Protection

Denso Announces a New Tank Base Protection System

A protective tape system for external tank bases to help in corrosion prevention.

July 12, 2011

Denso has announced the release of their "Tank Base Protection System". Storage tanks have a major problem with corrosion that occurs around the tank base. Due to gaps between the bottom plate and concrete plinth, water and air can penetrate and start corroding this area of the tank which can lead to the tank being shutdown for repair, or worse, replacement. Denso’s new Tank Base Protection System provides a cost effective and commercially proven repair solution for outer tank bases and chimes. Employing a series of tapes and coatings, Denso’s protection system will help seal these gaps to protect the tank base from further corrosion and shields it from environmentally corrosive agents. The protection system is easily hand applied to tank bases, utilizing Denso’s product lines of primers, mastics, tapes and topcoats. To read about how this system is currently protecting tank bases, visit our Denso Digest page and download Volume 28 No. 4.
